the dreaded happened to the 84 - 944 a couple of weeks ago.   The waterpump seized while driving down the highway at 60 miles an hour...

Here's a brief history of the car:  The engine was bought NEW in 1999 from Vertex, and has by my estimation 25 to 30K miles on it.  Unfortunately, I'm the third owner since the engine was replaced, so I don't really know the history that well.   I was going to do the belts in the spring, I had checked them after I bought the car 4 months ago, and while they were just a tad loose, everything looked fine.   There was a lot of corrosion around the and in the waterpump, probably due to using normal antifreeze?  The waterpump was locked up HARD.  I was able to break it free with a pipe wrench, but it's TOAST...

Here are rather graphic pictures of the aftermath....

These photo's aren't for the faint of heart or children.

(hey, I warned you!)

Here's where it gets good:  (look at the balance shaft belt: it's not only intact, but in great shape.  Heck, I'm going to reuse it)

It's sort of hard to see, but there are bits of the belt melted to the tensioner

nice debris pile, eh?

Looks like 5 bent valves...   CORRECTION: all 8 are bent!

This is one of the valves that didn't look bent when it was in the head...

The engine is out!   I took it out from the top - big mistake.  the bottom is a heck of a lot easier!

starting the rebuild.

Nice and CLEAN block!

So easy to work on the car when there's no engine in it!

Here the completed engine goes in.  from the bottom this time!

It's rough but what the heck do you expect for $1000 bucks anyway?
